Is there such a thing?
Never heard of greek based musicians playing and recording klezmer…i mean, there must be some…but i am not aware of local jewish communities that might have this music as part of their tradition. I am not an expert however.
I also don’t think Klezmer music was practiced in Greece. Romaniot Jews (Jannina, Preveza etc.) did not practice a music different from the local folk tradition, Sefaradic Jews quickly adopted the fasil style music from Poli and Smyrni, other Jews were small minorities not organized into communities and with no music of their own.
Kalispera
now a friend told me that:
Kostas Gadinis, who played both:
Greek and klezmer music.
He was born in 1885 in Salonica
xairetismata apo Stuttgart
kalosawatokiriako
Kostas (Gus) Gadinis was from Statista, not Salonica and not of jewish origin. In America, he played practically everything and this included of course Klezmer too, if American Jews demanded it from the audience.
Gus Gadinis is an interesting case. If he lived today, he would be classified as “ethnic” (in the commercial sense, not as in “an ethnic minority” but rather as in “pop, ethnic, ambient etc.”). Look him up.
Hi @Simon_Steiner . We discussed possible links with klezmer in a few threads, like Μουσική Klezmer & η σχέση της με την ελληνική παραδοσιακή μουσική and Περιστέρης Ρομβία
thank you. evxapistw

a incredible story:
Mitsos Matzis: Begraben mit seiner Klarinette im Land Epirus
This album is a document! I think I have never come across Nikos Chalkias playing, he is of course top rank as his younger brother Tassos also is. Another interesting feature of the album is Rumeli songs played on bouzouki, the evolution of the older Tambouras that was very popular all over mainland Greece.
A8 Miralogia is one of the best examples I ‘ve heard!
The Μπατζαίοι family is one of the most important klarino players of Epirus.
Hallo Niko,
