Το κομμάτι είναι παρμένο από το άρθρο του Walter Feldman “Cultural Authority and Authenticity in the Turkish Repertoire” Asian Music Volume No.1.
Since the last third of the 19th century, the non-Muslim areas of Istanbul, especially Greek Pera, began to develop a public entertainment life centered on night-clubs where alcoholic beverages were served. The music performed at these clubs was not based on urban folklore or on the older music of the Turkish coffee-houses, which were now becoming extinct, but on elements of the classical fasil which had lost its support in the palace. Greek and Armenian musicians such as Astik, Andon, Tatyos, Vasilaki and others composed both instrumental pesrevs and and saz semai as well as many sarki. The classical fasil genres beste and semai were rarely composed by these night club musicians. Much of the music in these clubs seems to have been arranged cyclically. After the pesrev, a compound vocal form was sung, created by grouping the sarki according to their rhytmic circle. The opening pieces were generally in the agir (heavy) versions of the usul aksak semai (10/4) and the usul aksak (9/4), and succeeding items were in turk aksagi (5/8), aksak (9/8), curcuna (10/16) or duyek (4/4). An increasing number used the old semai usul (6/8), phrased in 3/4, under the influence of the European waltz. Vocal finales were often in quick aksak, which had been the usul used by the extinct kocekce dancing boys, and now part of the current Gypsy dance karsilama. The instrumental finale used either the saz semai, based on the classical fasil, or the newly created longa, which were Turkish compositions inspired by the Romanian Gypsy hora and sirba.
This popular nightclub music maintained the principle of cyclicity more strictly than the nearly moribund classical concert. By the middle of the twentieth century, the name fasil had shifted its meaning. It no longer referred to a classical concert, but to the music of the nightclub, which had retained a cyclical format.
