There is a greek surf band in last decade, it’s name DIRTY FUSE which is famous to the greek surf & r’n’r sence. I had watced their gigs many times in the past, before 2020. They have many albums on their discography, but their second album, called SURFBETIKA, is a mix of rebetiko and surf music. In their gigs the guitarist plays with her baglama when plays tracks from this album.

Κοίτα να δεις! Πριν καμιά εβδομάδα τους πρωτοάκουσα. Κάποιος σε μια παρέα ρίχε βάλει και τους ακούγαμε από το κινητό, πολύ χαμηλά χαλί για κουβέντα, αλλά τους πρόσεξα, και στο δεύτερο-τρίτο κομμάτι ρώτησα τι είναι, και μου είπαν μια δυο βασικές πληροφορίες.

Ναι εγώ τους πρωτοάκουσα το '13, γενικά μου αρέσει και αυτη η σκηνή. Το συγκεκριμένο άλμπουμ το γράψαν το 14, το θυμάμαι διότι αγόρασα το συγκεκριμένο βινύλιο στην παρουσία του σε συναυλία τους στο Αν στα Εξάρχεια. Το ‘ρομαντικό’ της υπόθεσης είναι πως ο σόλο κιθαρίστας τους μέχρι την περίοδο μετά την κυκλοφορία του άλμπουμ τους, ήταν βραζιλιάνος(!!) ο οποίος έμενε μόνιμα Αθήνα εκείνα τα χρόνια και ήταν και λάτρης του ρεμπέτικου (εκτός από surfας). Εξού και το αποτέλεσμα. Γύρισε πίσω στην Βραζιλία όμως τέλη 14 με 15 λόγω της κρίσης που είχαμε τότε. Από τότε έχουν μία πανάξια ανυικαταστάτρια-κιθαρίστρια εξίσου απολαυστική στο παίξιμό της τόσο στην surf όσο και στα surfbetika με το μπαγλαμαδάκι της. Αξίοσημείωτο είναι πως και ο Βραζιλιάνος έπαιζε με μπαγλαμαδάκι😉

Now we’re getting closer. This one really sounded more “punk meets rebetiko” than all the previous, unless I skipped some. However, the meeting took place on a third ground (neither punk nor rebetiko).
I wonder, has anyone ever taken a punk original and arranged it to bouzouki music?

I have now about 15 examples and they transfer always Rembetiko to Surf, Punk, Reggae, Psychedelic, Rock … but i found no arrangement from a original Punksong to Bouzouki music, Rembetiko or other greek music.
oh … stop, i remember now … i played “Anarchy in the UK” from the Sex Pistols with Baglamas, it is very easy. Live, some years ago, just for fun. But i dont know a famous Punk group which plays Bouzouki music. I know 20 Punk records from Athens and Saloniki from the early days 1980-1983 and i know the greek Postpunk, but they dont use Bouzouki. … until now, may be there are some examples i don´t know.
I meant rather a bouzouki band playing punk pieces!
Ok, you obviously can’t make a repertoire like this, but someone might have made one single cover, among a repertoire of ordinary rebetiko songs. Βαγγέλης Γερμανός has done a rebetiko-style cover of his own Απόκληρος, which is a blues song. Actaually I think the rebetiko version was on record first, but still the composition is blues.

Sure, many of us listened to rock, metal, punk, etc before we stuck with rembetiko. So sometimes we play these beloved songs with bouzouki.

Not quite punk, not quite rebetiko either, but still an example of this direction of covering: from somewhere in the universe of pop to somewhere in the greek tradition.
