Istanbul Musical Seminars

Cambridge
16 September 2005

Dear Colleagues,

Our Istanbul Musical Seminars will be held at the Four Seasons Restaurant,
near to the top end of the Tunel Metro, on Saturday 1 October 2005.

The seminars will run from 10.00am to 5.30pm.

Admission is free, and is open to all interested parties, but all places
MUST BE BOOKED IN ADVANCE because we have a limit on numbers.

If you wish to come to the seminars, please notify me as soon as possible at
ed.emery@britishlibrary.net

A booking form will be sent by separate mail.

The restaurant will serve us a buffet lunch, at normal restaurant prices.
Please inform me in the e-mail if you want to eat lunch with us.

The seminars will be followed by an informal musical get-together at a
little open-air fish restaurant down by the Galata Bridge. Musicians and
singers, friends and family are welcome to join us for this.

The speakers and presentations for the seminars include the following, in
alphabetical order:

BάLENT AKSOY: A paper on the lost rebetika sung in Turkish and music made
by Greek musicians within the
Ottoman tradition.

ALI FUAT AYDIN: On Zeybek music and dance

LATIF BOLAT: Topic to be announced

NEFIN DINC: Showing of the film “REBETIKO: A SONG OF TWO CITIES” showing
relations between Greek and Turkish musical traditions.

[presented in absentia].

You may be interested to know that our focus on Zeybek music and dance, and
on the Greek Zeibekiko is part of a wider project in which we are planning
to produce a documentary film on the subject. Anyone wishing to contribute
material to the film is asked to contact me at the address above.

You are also reminded that this year’s HYDRA REBETIKO CONFERENCE takes place
on the island of Hydra on 13-17 October. Details at the website on

With best regards,
