The singer Giorgos Mazonakis has died, and I feel that there should be a thread about his death, as he may be the only artist of such popularity and acclaim to have promoted and fought for the bouzouki.
His statements and actions (The Sensitive Strings) in support of the bouzouki are well known.
He promoted it and brought it into quite a few homes.
May his soul rest in peace…
Mazonakis is a whole culture unto himself. On the one hand, he was the rock-and-roll, almost-singer party animal, with the substance abuse and all that goes with it; on the other, a powerhouse laïko voice and a down-to-earth character who was clearly very much loved. RIP!
