=================================================
Perach Adom band was established by Tomer Katz in 2001, a graduate of the Robin Academy for Music & Dance in Jerusalem. The band includes 6 members, a singer and 5 acoustic instrument players.
Perach Adom plays the Rembetiko music authentically but in Hebrew version as well as original pieces under the influence of that music. The band specializes in the Rembetiko style formed in the period of 1880-1950.
The phrase “Perach Adom” in translation to English means Red Flower to indicate the love (flower) and the pain (red) which delivered by the Rembetico music.
The Hebrew version was written by Tomer Katz in the spirit of the Rembetiko songs, and it resemble Greece as well as something from Israel views and spirit.
A birth of a band
All that story began 6 years ago when Tomer got a vacation in Greece to get away from the troubles and to look after a new way in life. The wish came true immediately after in the image of the Rembetiko music which conquered Tomer’s soul. When Tomer returned from Greece he brought with him a bozuki and a baglama and began to learn in the Jerusalem academy for music. He settled in the magical neighborhood of Jerusalem named Nah’laot, which located near the old urban market and was established 150 years ago by the poor people of the old city and immigrants coming then. There, playing for hours in a single room apartment on his new bozuki, Tomer caught the attention of a neighbour living across the street, named Zuchi. The music reminded him his childhood and the voices coming from Jaffa when Araina - the famous club for Greek music - was still there attracting many fans of Greek music. That was the point when the band was conceived. With the encouragement of Zuchi - Tomer gathered five players from the Academy and with them established the first embodiment of the band.
There, in the picture-like Ha’madregot street they began to perform - playing on the roof of Zuchi’s house, which used to them as a stage, and attracting all the people from the street who immediately became attached to the music.
In the beginning the band played only instrumentally. But then Tomer decided to add words to dozens of songs and gave it its final name - Perach Adom.
Since then the band has went through some transformations until the current group was formed two years ago by musicians from the neighbourhood - some of them students and some of them Nah’laot natives. Back then, the band began to perform in its own small club- Ha-husha - located, of course in the heart of Nah’laot. Performing every week, the band built its own home audience which was a mixture of old and young people. Those performances which continued into the late hours of the night (sometimes interrupted by the police) created a true relationship between the
musicians and the audience which became part of the band. There, covered with cigarettes smoke and Uzo the band shaped its current sound and expression.
During the last year the band is having a break through - it performs on big stages in Tel-Aviv and Jerusalem, with famous artists as Yair Dalal, Cohava Levi and Yehudit Tamir. Recently the band was filmed to the Greek TV for a show dealing with the Rembetiko music made in Israel.
One of the most exciting experiences was when the band made contact with the famous Rembetiko poet Manolis Rasulis which came to listen it and also dedicated a song for the band.
Although the band began to have big shows, every one of its members know that it doesn’t matter how big the stage is, it can’t never be compared to the intimacy and the unique atmosphere of Ha’usha club.
