New entry “Ντουντού”

ntountou (feminine)

A word found in quite a few songs (Constantinopolitan, Smyrneika and rebetika songs), with many meanings, such as: lady, miss, sweetheart, beloved, an older woman, “my dear”, as a form of address, etc.

It can be heard, for example, in the traditional song “Ach Manio mou”:

“…Ah, Manio mou and ntountou mou, and my golden name / I wanted to depict you as an icon in my room …”

or in the song “Ntountou” by Dalgas:

“…Hey, ntountou, hey, ntountou, girl,
you’ve made me lose my head.
Hey, ntountou, behave yourself,
so you don’t get us into trouble …”

[ETYMOLOGY: < Turkish “dudu” = woman]
