I can’t believe I’d missed that Simon @Simon_Steiner had uploaded the entire album here.
Regarding Tony Klein’s comments on McNis’s notes—McNis made the recordings and put out the release—I’d like to point out:
- A3, “Servicos”, has the wrong title, perhaps mistakenly taken from A2, which is indeed Serbian. A3 is Rovas.
- A7, “Tsamicos”, also has the wrong title; it is a syrtos. The claim that the sound of the zurna can be heard all over Greece is no longer true; it has been confined to specific pockets. I don’t know whether it still exists in Arachova, where this particular recording was made.
- On B4, the Northern Epirote polyphonic song “In the Plain of Dropoli”, McNis incorrectly notes that Turkish influence can be detected in this type of polyphony. It is purely local and Epirote, belonging to both Greeks and Albanians.
A fantastic album overall! Thank you, Simon (three and a half years later)!
