Hi Simon. When you get to the Kalymnian part of your story, I might help you with some more local versions of the song, other songs related to spongediving, etc. Generally the whole life of the island was, for generations, heavily influenced by spongediving, therefore music too. Don’t hesitate to pm me.

Kalispera pepe, very nice, thank you, i read your blog, i saw your blog in this thread, which Niko Politis sent me:

SALEM ALEIKUM (Dunja Rajter, Croatia) sung in german language

Επιφόρτωση: R-3831793-1467738516-6013.jpeg.jpg…

I can’'t see any audio file!

the song is from 1971! Dunja Rajter (* 3. März 1946 in Našice,[1] SR Kroatien, Jugoslawien) ist eine deutsche Sängerin und Schauspielerin.

she came 1964 to Germany.
yes, pepe, the song smells like a typical “Gastarbeiter”-song. it was fashion to sing with accent in germany.

but here is another version from my friend from Koropi, Antonis, with his Laterna.:

Very good sound! But I noticed a point where I wouldn’t agree with the stamping: 0.36 , repeated accordingly as the song progresses. Also, when listening carefully, some small deviations in the turning speed come up, I think.

Α laterna-player who once used to frequent the forum has explained what happens there: that’s the end of the piece. The rest is just repetitions.

The duration of a cylinder is generally short.

In its normal form the tune has no end, which is why many of the recordings just fade out. But this makes it inappropriate for a laterna arrangement, so the σταμπαδόρος has to alter the melody, adding a finale to it.

oh my god, there are a lot of versions in west-europa, some are really bad, you must not click ;-).

by the way: in germany was 1980 a lawsuit too! which Gkinis lost! :frowning:

there is also a serbian version. but i believe that the most are plagiarisms.

Among the most noteworthy cover cases I know of is this:

(I wrote that in 2010. I don’t know if the mistake in Wikipedia is still there.)

Dalida too! And many versions from Germany, indeed! Well, it was not a time that one could say the German song industry was at its best… Everybody was looking for ready – made songs from abroad, to provide with german lyrics for performance by local well known artists. Greece was not excluded from this new wave. And it was not only Nana Mouskouri with her Weisse Rosen aus Athen (Σαν σφυρίξεις τρεις φορές), or Chadjidakis’ Ein Schiff wird kommen (Τα παιδιά του Πειραιά). A relatively large hit in the Greek market of the time (Ο Γιώργος είναι πονηρός), was also “germanized” with German lyrics. I remember myself smiling when listening to Hey, Frau Bittermann, was macht denn dort Ihr Georg?, German for Κυρά Γιώργαινα, ο Γιώργος σου πού πάει;
